Utterly Exhausted? Mental Fitness Can Help
2022 has been described as a hurricane-kind-of-year. Following two years of nervous system overload, many of us have approached this year with the added pressure of playing ‘catch-up’ in almost every area of our lives.
As a result, we are tired and possibly more anxious and emotionally depleted than ever. As we head towards the end of 2022, we’re reminded of the power of focusing on building your mental fitness and your emotional muscle - especially when we’re feeling too exhausted to do so.
So… we will keep it simple and offer 3 ways to fill your bucket when it’s nearing empty.
BE COMPASSIONATE WITH YOURSELF
If feelings of loneliness or sadness come up for you at this time of year, meet them with self-compassion. It’s not uncommon to feel this way if you are missing someone or something important in your life. Consider acknowledging the feelings you’re experiencing, and giving yourself permission to do a bit of extra self-care over the coming weeks. How would you react to a friend if they told you they were feeling this way? Try treating yourself with the same sense of care.
BE VULNERABLE - DON’T WORRY ALONE
Gus always reminds us that sharing takes the weight out of our worries - make a pact with your village that if you’re ever struggling, you’ll reach out… and agree that they will do the same for you. Knowing you have each other's back (no matter what!) can start to lighten any emotional load you might be carrying.
BE GENTLE TOWARDS OTHERS
This time of year can be joyful and fun, but it can also be overwhelming and sad. Acting gently and with kindness will go a long way. If someone is grumpy towards you on the roads or in the shops, know that they could be experiencing a struggle you know nothing about. If someone you know is extra-emotional, or has become quieter and doesn’t want to chat, let them know you’re there to listen without judgement, whenever they are ready - and check in on how they are feeling a little later.
